Generally, quality CBD products will have a disclaimer at the bottom of the bottle or container that says…”consult your physician if you are Pregnant, Nursing,Taking Blood Pressure Medications or under 18 years of age.”
Understand that Topical Creams are different from Oral Tinctures. Topical’s are applied to the surface of the skin. Tinctures are taken orally, and enter the bloodstream, making it much more important to know what medications can interact with an oral substance, more so than a topical substance.
Let’s discuss some medications that may have potential negative interactions when taken with CBD products:
Vicodin – CBD can inhibit this medication’s ability to metabolize appropriately. Opioids are not known to adversely interact with CBD, in general. However, Codeine is the exception. Codeine is considered a “prodrug” and only works when it’s actively being metabolized. Therefore, its intended performance could be effected if you’re taking CBD with Vicodin.
Simvastatin - This drug is taken for High Cholesterol and is generally one of the most popular prescribed drugs for this purpose. CBD may decrease this drug’s effectiveness, prolong side effects, and possibly lead to medication toxicity due to the drug’s prolonged presence in the bloodstream.
Levothyroxine – This drug’s main function is to treat the thyroid for hypothyroidism. It is known to inhibit enzymes, so it’s safe to say that it may also inhibit the effects of the CBD.
Metformin – This drug is used to treat Type-2 Diabetes and is known as a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor, so it could inhibit the effects of CBD.
Lipitor – Generally taken for High Cholesterol, this drug is also given to patients suffering from coronary artery disease as a safeguard against stroke, heart attack, and chest pain. Taking Lipitor in conjunction with CBD may decrease Lipitors effectiveness, prolong side effects, and possibly lead to medication toxicity due to the drug’s prolonged presence in the bloodstream.
Amlodipine – Prescribed to prevent chest pain and treat high blood pressure. Taking Amlodipine in conjunction with CBD may decrease Amlodipine’s effectiveness, prolong side effects, and possibly lead to medication toxicity due to the drug’s prolonged presence in the bloodstream.
These are just some examples of how CBD can potentially interact with medications that are being taken. This is by no means an exhaustive list of drugs that have the potential to interact negatively with CBD products. Again, consult your physician before using CBD products if you are taking “any” medications.
Not only should consumers know what the potential for drug interaction is with CBD, but should also take into consideration the other oils (MCT Oil—medium chain triglycerides, Pomegranate Seed Oil, Olive oil, hemp seed oil and Coconut oil, just to name a few) and ingredient compounds being mixed with CBD, to form its final finished product, and how they might effect a person taking medications.
